PAMBIHIRA
Rooted in traditional Filipino clothing and reinterpreted through modern everyday comfort wear, the collection explores the relationship between heritage and contemporary identity. Classic silhouettes and cultural references are merged with relaxed, wearable forms, creating garments that feel both familiar and contemporary.
The collection is composed of relaxed short-sleeve open-collar polos, shirts, and sleeveless tops paired with tear-away workwear pants and long skirts, combining ease, movement, and everyday functionality with subtle references to traditional Filipino dress. The silhouettes are intentionally loose and comfortable, reflecting contemporary daily clothing while carrying cultural undertones through form and typography. Accessories such as scarves are worn in a manner inspired by the traditional styling of the pañuelo by Filipinas, recontextualizing the garment through menswear and suggesting a more fluid approach to styling and self-expression. Inspired by anting-anting, or Filipino amulets, 3D-printed brooches are pinned throughout the garments, reinforcing themes of protection, belief, and identity through modern fabrication.
At the center of the collection is the word pambihira, a Filipino expression that carries contradictory meanings. It can describe something exceptional and remarkable, but it can also convey frustration, disbelief, or exhaustion depending on tone and context. The calligraphic graphics seen throughout the collection are heavily inspired by anting-anting vests, sleeveless garments often covered with mystical symbols, prayers, and protective markings associated with Filipino folk beliefs. These garments were worn by some Filipino revolutionaries and Katipuneros during the Spanish colonial period and later became symbols of faith, protection, and resistance. The graphics transform the word into visual form, treating language not only as text, but as emotion, movement, and identity.
The collection reflects the experience of being Filipino today: overwhelmed yet hopeful, expressive yet restrained, proud yet critical, superstitious yet rational. Through typography, symbolism, clothing, and form, pambihira becomes both a statement and a reaction, a reflection of the contradictions, humor, struggle, and beauty embedded in everyday Filipino life.
